Tadventhe Advent candle being lit today traditionally represents Joy. As the coming of Jesus, our Savior, draws nearer, our joy builds with our anticipation of his birth. This joy isn’t dependent on what is going on in our lives or in our world. It doesn’t depend on the gifts we give or the gifts we receive. Nothing on earth can ever give us complete joy. That joy that flooded the hearts of the shepherds, the angels, the wise men, the hosts of heaven, and Mary and Joseph is the joy that still has the power today to overwhelm our hearts with rejoicing

Jesus is a friend who knows all your faults and still loves you anyway. God’s Little Instruction Book

But God showed His great love for us by sending Christ to die for us while we were still sinners. (Romans 5: 8)

“Christ came to earth for one reason: to give his life as a ransom for you, for me, for all of us. He sacrificed himself to give us a second chance. He would have gone to any lengths to do so. And he did. He went to the cross, where man’s utter despair collided with God’s unbending grace.” The Gift for all People by Max Lucado

“Jesus Christ is what God does, and the cross where God did it.” Frederick Buechner
