The 2nd Sunday in Advent

A hearty welcome to everyone with us today. We are now well into the Christmas season. The days will go quickly and many of us will find too few hours in the day to get everything ready. It is so easy to get caught up in the whirlwind around us. That is why it is so important to pause and remember that Jesus Christ is the centre of this celebration. The world won’t end because we are late getting cards out or buying and wrapping gifts is falling behind. Let’s remember that if we haven’t prepared all we need…there’s always Costco!

The Story of Christmas

We probably know the story of Christmas very, very well indeed.

We know that angels spoke directly to Mary and Joseph about the birth of Jesus. We know that Mary was a virgin. We know that Jesus was born to save us from our sin. We know that He was placed in a manger and visited by shepherds. As Christians, we may feel we know all this word for word. The story is the centre of our Christmas celebrations and festivity after all.

Yet, have we lost some of the awe and humbling wonder that the birth of Christ demands of us? Has this story become so familiar that it is reduced into being mundane and ordinary? The birth of Christ was never meant to put us in the ‘holiday mood’; the reality of this event should shake us to our core and leave us praising God in reverent fear. Because whether or not we’re surrounded by family and fun this Christmas, the Christmas story tells us we can each be truly family with God. From Journey into Christmas with Our Daily Bread

Prayer for Today
Almighty God, Who sent Your servant John the Baptist to prepare Your people to welcome the Messiah, inspire us, the ministers and stewards of Your truth, to turn our disobedient hearts to You, that when the Christ shall come again to be our judge, we may stand with confidence before His glory; Who is alive and reigns with You and the Holy Spirit, one God, now and forever. Amen.
